The location at which thoughts and behaviours are controlled takes place in the prefrontal cortex. The prefrontal cortex is responsible for the complex cognitive behaviour. It is believed that those with a more developed prefrontal cortex have better control over their emotions and are capable of understanding more based on the individuals environment and emotions. It is found that most mental disorders take place in the prefrontal cortex.
There are multiple ways to view the cognitive development in adolescence. The most common views include the constructivist view, and the information-processing perspective. The constructivist view takes a quantitive, state-theory, stating that the cognitive improvement in adolescents is relatively sudden and drastic. The information-processing perspectives derives from the study of artificial intelligence and attempts to explain cognitive development in relation to the growth of specific components of the individuals thinking process. Each view offers a intricate explanation of the cognitive development.
